With a 20 year career in academic publishing, my aim is to inspire change in the way our industry operates. My LinkedIn profile demonstrates the range of roles I have had and lists my skills. From digital content delivery to taxonomy, I develop new ideas for the publishing space to deliver products, design new business models and build internal organisational infrastructure. TikTok for Research
A Snapshot Video Approach to Research Publication
Students, researchers and practitioners of the future will be from the YouTube generation. Research publication needs to adapt. This idea is about the exposure of the original concept, thought process and reflections of researchers in the same or related fields. In my imagination, researchers could scan and store stream of consciousness records through brief video interviews, including links to sketches, annotations, and diagrams. It would enable collaboration at the beginning of the idea, before the full concept or hypothesis stage. The author would publish ‘stories’ of their research, something like TikTok or Instagram with links to the preprint server or version of record as they become available. Further details are here.

The Connectivity of Researchers
A Transparent Ecosphere of Research
Think of the chemical structure of a compound, then think of LinkedIn and the theory of six degrees of separation. To map the ecosphere of research and enable a global view of researchers and their specialisms, we should be able to link together an individual using their subject interests. I always visualise atoms as holding hands and am thinking that the most obvious application of this is to link researchers together for collaboration purposes. Further details are here.

Steps to Knowledge
A New Pathway from Research to Publication and Impact
This idea enables a new view on the decisions taken by researchers and funders throughout the research process. It starts from the development and popularity of an idea to the ultimate impact of the research. Throughout the process the researcher will gain feedback regarding the popularity of their course of action from peers and the general public. This will ultimately assist them in gaining funding, being formally published and reviewed to attract future funding based on the impact of their research. For more details see here.
Status: Seeking funding to design and launch the prototype.
Exposing the Thought Process of a Researcher
This idea began when I discovered that Marie Curie's original notebooks are stored at the Wellcome Trust - in a lead lined box as they are still radioactive! The exposure of the original concept, thought process and reflections is fascinating to me. I was further inspired by a TedTalks video on the benefits of doodling, enabling focus and creativity. In my imagination researchers could scan and store stream of consciousness records of their thought processes through sketches, annotations, and diagrams. This would enable collaboration at the beginning of the idea before the full concept or hypothesis stage. An exciting indication of what’s next for that subject area, as well as a historical record of where current scientific understanding originated.
Status: Seeking partner organisation(s) to develop the technology and/or provide author and contributor content.
